Skaters joking about skaters

Memes are one of the biggest phenomenons web experienced in the last decade. There are many new creations that made our life more easy or entertaining, but user-generated content has it's own magic, because it's mostly fired to your timeline by users like yourself and not by bigger companies. This makes content like memes so much relatable for all of us and that's why we get bluefaced scrolling Instagram in the night while we should get some sleep to make it through a new memable day. When you look at skateboarding, there is so much potential in a daily skaters life to make a meme about: nerds, pros who became body builders, the hype on Big Boy pants? Life is memable and so is skateboarding. That's why we reached out to some of our favorite meme creators in skateboarding to give you a look behind the content you laugh your ass of about. Shalom.

Who are you, where do you come from and what made you start a meme page about skateboarding?

My name is Jacques Hammond, I’m 24 year old and I’ve been skating for 11 years. I was born in New York City but I moved very young to a small city in Normandy, France. I then studied in Rouen and as soon as I was done, I moved to Barcelona. I started this meme page a year ago, at a time in my life where I was very insecure about my skateboarding abilities. But I also knew why I wasn’t as good as I wish. Tons of injuries, lots of partying, growing up and trying to be a responsible adult gets in the way of your usual six hours afternoon session. I kept seing laughable situations that would apply to me and many friends or acquaintances, so I figured I should cope with my “skateboarding insecurities” by making memes and sharing them with others.

Skaters are haters, but can they take a joke on themselves or did you get some angry messages?

I’ve had a bit of everything, and yes angry messages for sure, some people told me “I wish you get covid”. I thought that was pretty hilarious. But the big majority loves to relate to my stuff, especially when it hits harsh truth. I guess that just like me makes them cope.

Do pros react to your postings about them?

Yes, a bunch of them. Nassim Lachab and Nassim Guammaz seem to enjoy my memes.
Brazilians monsters like Ivan Monteiro, Gabriel Fortunato and even Tiago Lemos follow the page that always surprised me. I’m usually quite neutral in my jokes, and even if they might be some form of critic, I try to never make it about the person itself. The funniest situation was Adrien Bulard threatening to call a lawyer on me after I added a very innocent caption on top of a video he himself had put on Instagram.

Which follower you are most proud of?

That’s a very hard question ! Of course all the pro’s, filmers and skateshops owners make me feel very valid about my skateboarding opinion so i always feel proud when I see their names pop. But when I first started the page, Luy Pa Sin and Nassim Lachhab where the first well known skaters to share my stuff and this felt very satisfying.

Jokes and meme pages often criticize. What do you criticize in skateboarding and what things should change?

They do and they should ! I think there’s two major things I don’t like in skateboarding: The first one is the quest for the greatest trick/ skill level, you see some pro and ams execute in skateparks, it’s boring, it doesn’t bring anything new to the table , and it creates this false idea that your skating exists through the tricks you can land. It should actually be about which spots you can skate, where can you creativity get you, this is actually why I proclaim myself a bad skater, I only skate flat ground, ledges and small gaps because I’m uncomfortable with everything else. The second one is skaters trapped in the do nothing lifestyle. If you’re in your 20’s without a job, living at your parents, smoking weed and drinking beer every other day, I don’t care about your kickflip backnose blunt, you have to grow up, you can’t just wait for the money to arrive, time flies fast.

What are the ingredients for a good meme?

I’d say three factors: It has to be relatable, talk about something that people can feel. It has to be slightly niche , make it so understanding the joke is a reward for your knowledge about something. And finally make it a bit dumb, show that the opinion shared through the meme doesn’t seem like an absolute truth but more as a joke you’d share with close friends.

How do you come up with ideas for a meme?

I think of stuff that happens to myself, to my friends, around the world. Usually a situation that repeat itself creates the meme.

Which memes work best?

So far the most consistent ones are the ones who talk about skaters nationality. If they think « oh I’m from this place , and that’s true » then they’ll share it with all of their friends. People like to laugh about their own stereotypes I guess.

Which is your own most popular meme?

This one :

I think this one was a success because so many skaters are living or have lived in Barcelona, but also every non skater from Barcelona knows one of us who’s been living like this. It definitely reached a point where many non skaters could get the joke.

Which meme do you like the most of all?

This one is really personal because I can recall many drunk times explaining the whole Suciu AB-BA thing to non skaters. Some of them got it and it was really dope sharing my love for skateboarding with them. I also try to build my own skating in a similar way. I really am that guy in the picture, except I did go to uni.

Who is the biggest meme of all skaters right now?

I got a soft spot for Aurelien Giraud. Imagine telling people 20 years ago that some French dude who mostly skate parks is pro for Plan B. This right now is giving me an idea for a meme haha.

Give a shoutout to your favorite skate meme page!

@_open.sesamemes_ !! You can tell he’s got a very solid skate culture and he’s super creative. Love his content.

Who are you, where do you come from and what made you start a meme page about skateboarding?

I am the GrindQueen, also known as the King of Grinds. I hail from the land of granite ledges and kinked prefab flatbars. I started a meme page about trucks because I was bored of seeing everyone at the park riding indy trucks and wanted to remind them of nostalgic velvet truck hangars, OG tensor baseplates, and of course the elusive down low kingpin that is finally making a comeback.

Skaters are haters, but can they take a joke on themselves or did you get some angry messages?

Some of them can, shout out to Pizza skateboards for not having a clue to what was going on between me and frontlipbigspin but they understand the power of social media marketing and creating a fun story for the people. Shout out to Pizza for getting the joke. Can’t believe I actually got a flat bar from Element out of this.

Do pros react to your postings about them?

Yea, most of them do. Nothing cooler than being able to make Ryan Gallant and Caswell Berry laugh. I’m 30 years old and have been skating since 1999. Still two of my favorite skaters to this day. CCS is always down to reshare the images I post of the greatest mail-order of all time. Glad I saved all those.

Which follower you are most proud of?

Matt Tomasello. The wizard of skateboarding also has a sense of humor. And for that I say Shalom Matt.

Jokes and meme pages often criticize. What do you criticize in skateboarding and what things should change?

I’ve been running this page since march 2019 and since then independent has already removed the logo off their baseplate. I like to criticize how seriously everyone takes skating. Like you know how much impact @feedback_ts had on these kids? Now we have 15 year olds that are too worried about doing illegal tricks than having fun. If you’re taking yourself too seriously you’ve already lost. Go nollie smith, do a pressure flip and quit looking at your phone when you’re out on the sesh with your friends. And if you’re rocking headphones on the sesh, don’t even talk to me.

"Now we have 15 year olds that are too worried about doing illegal tricks than having fun"

What are the ingredients for a good meme?

It can’t be forced, you have to let the thoughts flow naturally, sometimes with the help of a couple of bong rips. I’m not worried about pumping out a meme everyday, if it is a meme it has to make me personally laugh out loud, if I don’t think its funny, it doesn’t get posted. Some of my jokes are really niche and sometimes I might make a joke for just one person. All my jokes I think of and try to make sure other skate meme pages haven’t already covered that topic.

How do you come up with ideas for a meme?

I live in a skate house with some pretty eccentric dudes and I draw inspiration from getting out and skating with different types of people and skating at different places. Just hit blue park for two hours and I had to jot down some notes for jokes cause sometimes I forget it. I have an insane collection of skate videos and magazines from 1999-2007 which is right before the world pretty much went digital and there’s so much quality content I still have yet to cover. I play Thps 2 on my Playstation 2 everyday. My life is a meme.

Which memes work best?

All of the memes I create tie into my actual life. If its windy outside and a joke comes to me; we got a joke about how skaters hate wind.

Which is your own most popular meme?

The series of memes between myself and frontlipbigspin when we linked up to play a game of skate on the element flatbar. Or anything about Mike V on my page.

Who is the biggest meme of all skaters right now?

Terry Kennedy. Shalom.

Who are you, where do you come from and what made you start a meme page about skateboarding?

We’re four admins with zero brain cells in Brooklyn, NY. And we started Verifried because skateboarding is a total joke. 😉

Skaters are haters, but can they take a joke on themselves or did you get some angry messages?

No one has gotten too heated, but we will say this: if you get mad, the joke only gets funnier.

Do pros react to your postings about them?

Definitely. One time we made a 30-person groupchat with all the SOTY contenders, and a bunch of them responded. (It’s still on our page as a highlight.) Think about how weird that is. We follow professional athletes who are happy to engage with their fans directly on social media. Does that happen in basketball? Football? Baseball? No.

Which follower you are most proud of?

To be honest… we fan out on all our followers 😭 #simpingainteasy

Jokes and meme pages often criticize. What do you criticize in skateboarding and what things should change?

Skateboarding is a beautifully flawed, deeply peculiar, and occasionally problematic thing which is constantly reinventing and iterating upon itself, becoming both simultaneously cooler and dorkier with every passing second. What would we change? Nothing. Are you kidding me? These jokes basically write themselves right now. lmao

"1. Will a skater get this? 2. Is it cooked? 3. Fuck it, post it anyway"

What are the ingredients for a good meme?

  1. Will a skater get this?
  2. Is it cooked?
  3. Fuck it, post it anyway

How do you come up with ideas for a meme?

When you see something dumb, say something dumber.

Which memes work best?

People like to participate. Formats they can jump in on, surveys, caption contests, etc – that makes content relatable. Also, everyone loves a good NBD. If you come up with an idea that’s never been done – DROP IT!

Which is your own most popular meme?

The Straight to Jail Series, The SOTY Contender Groupchat, If Strobeck Filmed The 900, Fully Flared Gender Reveal…

Which meme do you like the most of all?

“Fuck it… deep dish griptape” is one of our oldest pieces and is probably the most fried idea ever. We have a lot of old ones that people haven‘t seen from when like 10 people followed us… go get some.

Who is the biggest meme of all skaters right now?

Us.

In the skate meme game, Jamal Smith is the one true godfather. Pay respect to the man. Shalom. Verifried, out.

Who are you, where do you come from and what made you start a meme page about skateboarding?

Most of my followers assume I’m American. I’m European though. I was working in the skateboarding industry from the age of 17 to 30. Had enough of it and found a “real” job outside skating. Then I guess I missed it a lil bit and started this bullshit page because my inner teenager wanted to reminisce and joke about our lives as skaters.

Skaters are haters, but can they take a joke on themselves or did you get some angry messages?

I know that Brandon Biebel cannot take a joke – at all. I never made a joke on him though – he’s doing fine by himself. I don’t recall getting angry messages directly from people that I messed with. But some followers been offended a few times – often because they misunderstand the meme or my humor.

Do pros react to your postings about them?

Andrew Allen, Appleyard, Mason Silva, Alex Chalmers, John Shanahan, Andrew Brophy all had a laugh over some shit I made about them. I was never mean to them – maybe Brophy a little bit but he laughed it off.

Which follower are you most proud of?

Motherfuckin’ JAKE RUPP!

Jokes and meme pages often criticize. What do you criticize in skateboarding?

Switch frontside bigspins.

Why?

It’s the go-to trick for people who can’t do any other switch tricks. They don’t require any switch skills to learn. And that is funny because it’s true.

Can you do a ss fs bigspin?

No of course not. I never tried one.

"If you make something funny without saying anything you’ve done a good job"

What are the ingredients for a good meme?

When you can address something that your audience can relate to in a funny way. Doesn’t have to be negative. Maybe just bring some lame shit up we all did years ago but have forgotten about. And I think the best memes are those where you don’t need words. No words on the photo and no caption. If you make something funny without saying anything you’ve done a good job.

How do you come up with ideas for a meme?

I often just see a regular non-skate meme and I remake it with some random skate related shit. It’s not very hard at all!

What meme started it all for you?

The one where I spit the truth about professional skaters nowadays. They’re not street and RAW anymore. It’s all coconut water and Instagram giveaways.

Which is your own most popular meme?

I think the Jay Leno/Andrew Allen one got the most likes ever.

Which meme do you like the most of all?

Who are you, where do you come from and what made you start a meme page about skateboarding?

The less you know the better.

Skaters are haters, but can they take a joke on themselves or did you get some angry messages?

Most people irl can’t take a joke when they feel personally attacked. Put them behind an IG url and a tiny phone screen – it’s even worse. With every meme I make, I get 99+ unread angry DM problems, but responding to them ain’t one. The ones who can take a joke tho, those are my followers. People with a sense of humor, able to laugh at themselves.

Do pros react to your postings about them?

I won’t namedrop here. But yeah. Pros (and their fathers) have been in my DMs. I’ve already said too much. But yeah, more than I ever expected. The only pro I ever reached out to hoping for a response from was Ali Boulala. I’d be ok being left on seen, but he never even read it.

Which follower you are most proud of?

I would say who... but I’m trying to play it cool by pretending I don’t notice they follow me. Next question?

Jokes and meme pages often criticize. What do you criticize in skateboarding and what things should change?

What gets criticized in skating is bullshit imho. The reason someone picks up a board and decides to ride should never be in question. But, I like to stir the pot with my opinions about brands, and how I prefer a well-executed wallride to a perfectly-timed laser flip, any day. Though, I counter that shit with recognizing some really badass skaters. With that said, nothing should change. Do what you love. Preference, opinion, or criticism should never deter someone from trying to land a laser flip, even though they are wack as fuck.

"Pros (and their fathers) have been in my DMs"

What are the ingredients for a good meme?

If you make yourself laugh when you think of it, make it. Fuck the rest.

How do you come up with ideas for a meme?

I’m a writer. Lucky/cursed enough to do it for a living/for fun. Naturally, just fucked with ideas swirling in my brain. Unresolved trauma paired with in-the-moment bullshit (specifically unrequited skater romances) is what makes this lil brain go off on memes.

Which memes work best?

The ones you don’t think twice about? Initially, I made this off-the-radar meme page to have a creative outlet, posting bullshit, trying to get over an ex. Somehow people found solace in my unconventional recovery process and followed me, while laughing with me, or at me? I don’t fucking know. Did I just answer your first question? Shit.

Which meme do you like the most of all?

Every meme featuring half cabs.

Who is the biggest meme of all skaters right now?

Oh my god. This goes without saying. I hope. But I won’t be the first one to acknowledge it.
